IMDG Code 39-18 published in 2018 may be used partly or wholly during 2019 and will become mandatory from 1st January 2020.

One of the new entries in Dangerous Goods List, chapter 3.2, of IMDG Code is UN 3536 LITHIUM BATTERIES INSTALLED IN CARGO TRANSPORT UNIT lithium ion batteries or lithium metal batteries.

This entry is for containers installed with lithium batteries to be used as mobile power supply unit designed only to provide power external to the container.

Fire extinguishers and air conditioning system if installed in the container must be properly secured/installed and are not subject to the provisions of IMDG Code.

No other goods which are dangerous according to IMDG Code is permitted to be loaded in this container.

Lithium Batteries must meet all provisions of IMDG Code sections 2.9.4.1 to .7.

Packing

No packing is required for lithium batteries.

Marking and Labelling

Batteries do not require marking or labeling. Container must be marked with UN Number and placards must be affixed on two opposite sides. See IMDG Code section 5.3.2.1.2 for marking UN Number and section 5.3.1.1.2 for placarding of the container.
