Use of hydrogen peroxide disinfectants has increased ever since COVID-19 pandemic has gripped the world.  Hydrogen peroxide disinfectant products targeting household consumers are available online and in retail stores.  Are these products dangerous goods?

IMDG Code lists hydrogen peroxides as per the concentration in aqueous solution or stabilized.

Hydrogen peroxide aqueous solutions with less than 8% hydrogen peroxide are not subject to dangerous goods classification of IMDG Code.

However, these products must be used carefully. GHS hazard classification of 3% solution is “Serious Eye Damage/Eye Irritation – Category 2/2A” with below precautionary statements

Prevention

• P261 – Avoid breathing mist/vapors/spray
• P280 – Wear protective gloves/ protective clothing/ eye protection/ face protection
• P221 – Take any precaution to avoid mixing with combustibles/flammables
• P220 – Keep/Store away from clothing/flammable materials/combustibles

Response

• P305 + P351 + P338 – IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
• P310 – Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor.
• P302 + P352 – IF ON SKIN: Wash with plenty of water.
• P332 + P313 – If skin irritation occurs: Get medical advice/ attention.
• P362 + P364 – Take off all contaminated clothing and wash it before reuse
