IMDG Code 39-18 will come out by October 2018 for sales. Contracting Governments to the SOLAS Convention may apply IMDG Code 39-18 in whole or in part on a voluntary basis from 1 January 2019 before it become mandatory from 1st January 2020.

 What’s new in IMDG Code 39-18?

IMDG Code 39-18 is aligned with 20th Revised edition of UN Model Regulations and 7th revised edition of GHS.

Below are the prominent changes:

  • Transport of samples
  • Samples of energetic materials for testing purposes
  • Transport of wastes
  • Provisions for viscous flammable liquids
  • Addition to self-reactive substances
  • Addition to Organic Peroxides
  • Replacement of entire chapter 2.8, corrosive substances
  • Addition of Stepwise approach to classify and assign packing group of corrosive mixtures
  • Addition of LITHIUM BATTERIES INSTALLED IN CARGO TRANSPORT UNIT
  • Extensive additions to segregation, column 16b, of dangerous goods list
  • 14 new entries to dangerous goods list
  • Deletion and changes to various existing special provisions
  • 7 new special provisions
  • 2 new packing instructions and changes to various existing packing instructions
  • Replacement of Documentation required aboard the ship
  • Addition of Segregation Group Codes (SGG)
  • A new table in segregation chapter 7.2 which may be loaded together in same CTU
  • Amendments to segregation codes
  • Complete replacement of provisions for Cargo transport units under temperature control
  • Changes to addresses of certain Competent Authorities

  1. Hi Shashi,
    You probably notice that, but there is an important change for those who ship these substances:
    IMDG introduce SP 274 requiring technical name for UN 1791 Hypochlorite solution and 1908 chlorites n.o.s.
    This, because ammonium hypochlorite (SP 900) and ammonium chlorite (SP 352) are banned from transport and companies want to know which type of chlorite / hypocholorite is shipped.
    Good idea, except this is only required by IMDG Code, not for other modes…
