Good things come in small packages
Which dangerous goods can be transported as “limited quantities”, how they must be packed and consigned according to IMDG Code 39-18?

Packing | Only combination packing- inner packagings placed in suitable outer packagings. Articles do not require inner packaging. Corrosive liquids of class 8 PG II glass, porcelain or stoneware inner packagings must be enclosed in a compatible and rigid intermediate packaging. |
Quantity – Inner packaging | The applicable quantity limit for the inner packaging or article is specified for each substance in column 7a of the Dangerous Goods List of chapter 3.2. |
Quantity – Outer packaging | Shrink-wrapped or stretch-wrapped trays: total gross mass of the package must not exceed 20 kg. (Articles of class 1.4S not permitted in shrink-wrap/stretch-wrap trays). Other outer packaging: total gross mass of the package must not exceed 30 kg. |
Segregation – With other dangerous goods packages | No Segregation applicable. Articles of division 1.4S, must not be stowed in the same compartment or hold, or cargo transport unit with dangerous goods of class 1 of compatibility groups A and L. |
Segregation – Within same outer package | Substances in packing group III within the same class may be packed together provided they comply with 7.2.6.1 of IMDG Code (substances do not react dangerously with each other and cause: combustion and/or evolution of considerable heat;evolution of flammable, toxic or asphyxiant gases;the formation of corrosive substances; orthe formation of unstable substances) In this case include in dangerous goods declaration the words “Transport in accordance with 3.4.4.1.2 of the IMDG Code”. |
Stowage | Category A -ON DECK OR UNDER DECK. |
Marking | Limited Quantities packages must be marked with LQ mark as shown here. Mark for packages containing limited quantities conforming to part 3, chapter 4 of the ICAO Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air is also acceptable for sea transport. |
Placarding | Container packed only with dangerous goods in limited quantities = limited quantities mark. Container packed with dangerous goods in limited quantities and dangerous goods not in limited quantities = placards and marks required for dangerous goods not in limited quantities. |
Documentation | In dangerous goods declaration add the words “limited quantity” or “LTD QTY” together with the description of the shipment. |
Training | Those involved in transport of dangerous goods in limited quantities must be trained according to chapter 1.3 of IMDG Code. |
