Potential source of ignition
Class 1 explosives must not be stowed within a horizonal distance of 6 m from potential source of ignition.
Potential sources of ignition are, not limited to, open fires, machinery exhausts, galley uptakes, electrical outlets and electrical equipment including those on refrigerated or heated cargo transport units unless they are of certified safe type [For cargo spaces, refer to SOLAS II-2/19.3.2 and for refrigerated or heated cargo transport units refer to Recommendations published by the International Electrotechnical Commission, in particular IEC 60079.]
Ship’s side
Other than division 1.4 class 1 explosives must not be stowed closer to she ship’s side than a distance equal to one eighth of the beam or 2.4 m whichever is lesser.
Life-saving appliances, living quarters and areas with public access
Other than division 1.4 class 1 explosives must not be stowed less than a horizontal distance of 12 m from living quarters, life-saving appliances and areas with public access.
Life-saving appliances
As per the unified Interpretation on the issue of “life-saving appliances, life-saving appliances means the vessel’s main survival craft and rescue boat(s) as required by SOLAS regulations III/21 or III/31.1 and is not intended to mean other life-saving appliances, such as lifebuoys, additional liferafts required by SOLAS regulation III/31.3.2 and III/31.1.4 and any lifejackets and immersion suits associated with such liferafts.
Areas with public access
Cargo Ships: any area used for the access to the ship (e.g. areas for embarkation and disembarkation and pilot boarding area) and areas where the ship’s crew normally work or to which they have access excluding cargo area.
Passenger ships: any area that the ship’s passengers can access without any authorization or limitation and the areas as mentioned for cargo ships.
