British supermarket chain Iceland’s Christmas advertisement, “There is a Rang-tan in my bedroom”, highlighting the role of palm oil in deforestation affecting orangutans was blocked by advertising standards department of U.K.

There’s a Rang-tan in my bedroom
and I don’t know what to do.
She plays with all my teddies
and keeps borrowing my shoe.
She destroys all of my house plants
and she keeps on shouting “OOO”!
She throws away my chocolate
and she howls at my shampoo.
There’s a Rang-tan in my bedroom
and I don’t want her to stay.
So I told the naughty Rang-tan
that she had to go away.
Oh Rang-tan in my bedroom
just before you go….
Why were you in my bedroom?
I really want to know.

There’s a human in my forest
and I don’t know what to do.
He destroyed all of our trees for
your food and your shampoo.

There’s a human in my forest
and I don’t know what to do.
He took away my mother
and I’m scared he’ll take me too.
There are humans in my forest
and I don’t know what to do
They’re burning it for palm oil
so I thought I’d stay with you.

Oh Rang-tan in my bedroom
Now I do know what to do
I’ll fight to save your home
and I’ll stop you feeling blue.
I’ll share your story far and wide
so others can fight too.
Oh Rang-tan in my bedroom
I swear it on the stars
the future’s not yet written
but I’ll make sure it is ours.

This soul-searching Christmas ad narrated by Emma Thompson is a must watch to realize what we are doing to the destruction of the habitat of orangutans.

25 orangutans we loose every day !

How we all are collectively responsible for this?

50% of food and non-food items found in supermarkets in U.K. use palm oil, it is almost similar percentage in other geographical areas.Palm oil is used in personnel care products, cosmetics, fast food and snacks etc.

85% of global palm oil production is from Indonesia and Malaysia. Non-sustainable way of producing palm oil by deforestation to cultivate palm trees have caused irreparable damage to rain forests.

Orangutans are native to Indonesia and Malaysia, their existence is under threat due to massive scale of deforestation for palm oil plantation, gold mining and natural forest fires.

We can urge the big brands to stop using palm oil from forest destroying producers. Visit Greenpeace petition page here

Palm oil cargo care

To retain the quality of palm oil during transport and storage various methods may require such as nitrogen blanketing, load/discharge temperature, heating during transit. Cargo damage may occur due to hydrolysis, contamination, oxidation.

Overheating of cargo during transport and contamination from previously carried banned cargoes can result in rejection of shipment and/or claims.

Reference for transport and storage of palm oil and cargo care can be found at Federation of Oils, Seeds and Fats Associations (FOSFA International) and Food and Agriculture Organization of The United Nations.
