Section 2.0.0.1 of IMDG Code states

“The classification shall be made by the shipper/consignor or by the appropriate competent authority where specified in this Code.”

Those who Classify dangerous goods and identify proper shipping name must be trained in below sections of IMDG Code

  • The Structure of the Description of Substances
  • The Classes of Dangerous Goods And The Principles of Their Classification
  • The Nature of The Dangerous Substances And Articles Transported (Their Physical, Chemical and Toxicological Properties)
  • The Procedure for Classifying Solutions And Mixtures
  • Identification by Proper Shipping Name
  • Use of Dangerous Goods List

And following publications

  • International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, as amended 
  • United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods – Model Regulations, as amended
  • United Nations – Manual of Tests and Criteria, as amended
  • International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships 1973 as modified by the Protocol of 1978 (MARPOL), as amended
