Alcohol based hand sanitizer is listed in World Health Organization’s “List of essential medicines”. Ever since Coronavirus disease has turned in to global pandemic these sanitizers are much in demand and horded by many resulting in scarcity to non-availability in some places.

Alcohol based hand sanitizer

Some countries have made temporary provisions for manufacturing alcohol-based hand sanitizers with relaxed rules for easy availability of same. Certain alcohol and wine distillers have switched over from producing whiskey and wine to sanitizers.

Alcohol based sanitizers contain 60%-95% alcohol, typically ethanol, or n-propanol. WHO’s guide to local production of alcohol-based sanitizer has listed down ingredients and percentage. Download the guide here

Transport Regulations

Alcohol based hand sanitizers are flammable liquid in transport regulations. Depending on the alcohol used they should be declared as

  • UN 1219 ISOPROPANOL (ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL)
  • UN 1170 ETHANOL (ETHYL ALCOHOL) or ETHANOL SOLUTION (ETHYL ALCOHOL SOLUTION)
  • UN 1987 ALCOHOLS, N.O.S. or UN 1993 Flammable Liquid, N.O.S.
