While riding at anchor at Port of Colombo fire erupted on vessel X-Press Pearl on 21st May 2021. Sri Lankan naval vessels and tugs from port authority engaged in firefighting. Fire is extinguished but continuous monitoring of the situation and cooling operation is going on to prevent any reignition of fire.

All crew members are safe on board.

Vessel had sailed on 15th May from Hazira, India, carrying 1400+ containers including 25 tones of nitric acid and some other dangerous goods. Reason for fire may only be found in post accident investigation.

A large explosion took place on vessel, two crew members were admitted to hospital, all crew evacuated.
