Lighters filled with flammable gas or flammable liquids are dangerous goods in transport.

Classification is the process of assigning UN Number, Proper shipping name, Packing group, Technical name as applicable.

Lighters filled with flammable gas and lighter refills containing flammable gas is listed by name in IMDG Code.

  • UN 1057 LIGHTERS, Class 2.1
  • UN 1057 LIGHTER REFILLS, Class 2.1

Packing group is not assigned to class 2 gases however, outer packagings must meet packing group II performance level for transporting UN 1057 lighters and lighter refills.

Each lighter must not contain more than 10 g of liquefied petroleum gas and each lighter refill must not contain more than 65 g or liquefied petroleum gas.

Liquid portion of gas in lighter must not be more than 85% of the capacity at 15 Deg C.

How about lighters filled with flammable liquid?

Lighters filled with flammable liquids are not listed by name in IMDG Code hence assignment of UN Number should consider physical and chemical properties and assign the most appropriate proper shipping name

Most of the lighters with liquid fuel is using petroleum-based liquids and assigned to UN 1268, PETROLEUM DISTILLATES, N.O.S., Class 3

Domestic shipments in United states can use 1057 for lighters with flammable liquid preceded by letters “NA”. NA 1057, Lighters, non-pressurized, containing flammable liquid, Class 3, PG II
