Multi compartment portable tanks have dividing walls with more than one independent compartments.

Example

  • 13,000 litres x 2 compartments, or,
  • 10,000 litres + 5000 litres + 10,000 litres compartments

Segregation

When different dangerous good are being loaded then segregation rules must be adhered to.  Different dangerous goods must not be loaded in adjoining compartments of shells when they may react dangerously with each other and cause:

  • combustion and/or evolution of considerable heat;
  • evolution of flammable, toxic or asphyxiant gases;
  • the formation of corrosive substances;
  • the formation of unstable substances;
  • dangerous rise in pressure.

Whenever a segregation rule is applicable the goods are not permitted to be transported in the same cargo transport unit except as provided in chapters 7.2 and 7.3 of IMDG Code.

Placarding & Marking

Placards must clearly be displayed on a multiple-compartment tank containing more than one dangerous goods or their residues: along each side at the positions of the relevant compartments. If all compartments are required to display the same placards, these placards need to be displayed only once along each side of the multi compartment portable tank.

UN number must be displayed on each compartment of a multi-compartment tank cargo transport unit;
