2019 dangerous goods transport regulations have New UN numbers for Articles containing dangerous goods substances

Up to end 2018, an article containing dangerous goods may be shipped:

  • Under its own UN number (such as refrigerating machines UN 2857 or 3358, articles, pressurized, pneumatic UN 3164 or more recently added, engine or machinery, internal combustion UN 3528, 3529 3530)
  • Under the UN number of the good contained in the object (however, it is often difficult to meet requirements, especially with packaging)
  • Under UN 3363 Dangerous goods in machinery or in apparatus. But this is limited to goods and quantities which are authorized in “limited quantities” (note : not subject to ADR / RID or ADN)
  •  If none of these, under special authorization of competent authorities. (note : this did not apply to ADR / RID or ADN where these articles were not subject to these regulations – 1.1.3.1b)). This led to numerous demands and UN committee was asked to foresee specific ways of shipping

As of 1st January 2019, 12 new UN numbers have been introduced, so to cover objects containing one or more dangerous goods of different classes :

  • Notes : class 1, 6.2 and 7 have been excluded
  • None of these are permitted aboard planes through IATA DGR
  • Some are subject to competent authorities’ agreement in maritime transport (IMDG code)
