Certain things happen, may be, only in India. The police in the state of Haryana had seized large quantities of alcohol, both country liquor and Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), the name itself is an oxymoron, and stored in different police stations pending the decision by the court.

Total quantity stored include

  • Country liquor 50,000 litres
  • Wine 30,000 litres
  • Beer 3,000 cans

The seized alcohols were stored in 30 different police stations. After the court’s verdict the alcohol was supposed to be destroyed that’s the time they found 29,000 litres stored in 25 different police stations are missing.  Police say rats drank the alcohol. Mostly country liquors are in plastic bottles which can be gnawed by rats, but wine in glass bottles and beer in aluminium cans too is believed to be gnawed and drank by rats.

Alcoholic beverages containing more than 24% alcohol is dangerous goods of class 3, flammable liquids, in IMDG Code.

Alcoholic beverages containing 24% to 70% alcohol by volume in packagings lesser than 250 litres are not dangerous goods for sea transport but can still be transported as dangerous goods in limited quantities.

IMDG Code permits alcoholic beverages containing 24% to 70% alcohol by volume in wooden barrels for transporting by sea, each barrel not to contain more than 500 litres, at least 3% ullage must be left in the barrels to allow expansion of the liquid, barrels must be packed inside container (CTU) meeting the CSC provisions and stowage aboard ships is as required for class 3 flammable liquids.
