IMDG Code states that “a cargo transport unit (a freight container, semi-trailer or portable tank ) containing dangerous goods or residues of dangerous goods shall clearly display placards  one on each side and one on each end of the unit.

For orientation arrows the Code says positioning must be ‘arrows pointing in the correct upright direction’. However, the Code does not say placards must be affixed “upright” 😊

Will someone affix class 3 placard as below?

The figure 3 and the symbol of flame will ensure the person who affix the placard to fix it in upright position.

But there was a case where the placard was affixed upside down on an ISO Tank and the vessel was penalized by the port authority who noticed this violation.

Specimen labels in IMDG Code

When we notice we can see only class 9 label has the class figure at bottom corner underlined.

This underline is, I believe, to ensure the person affixing label or placard not to make a mistake in the orientation.

Training

Those who mark, label packages and placard CTUs must receive training in below contents.

  • Classes
  • Marking, labelling and placarding requirements
  • Primary and subsidiary risk labels
  • Marine pollutants
  • Limited quantities and excepted quantities
