Many shippers are reporting that certain ports/terminals and shipping lines’ representatives at ports in India are insisting to replace the placards affixed on the cargo transport units packed with classes 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 or 6.1.

Which are the correct labels/placards for classes 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 & 6.1 according to IMDG Code and other dangerous goods transport regulations?

Chapters 5.2 & 5.3 of UN Model Regulations 20th Revised Edition & IMDG Code 39th Amendment

  • 5.2.2.1.1. – Labels identifying primary and subsidiary hazards shall conform to models Nos. 1 to 9 illustrated in 5.2.2.2.2. The “EXPLOSIVE” subsidiary hazard label is model No. 1.
  • 5.2.2.2 – Provisions for labels
  • Section 5.3.1.2 – Specifications for placards

  • Class, Division or Category: Class 6.1: Toxic substances
  • Symbol and symbol colour: Skull and crossbones: black

Displaying marks, labels & placards not meeting the provisions of IMDG Code on packages, IBCs & cargo transport units are violation of the provisions of the Code.
