What is the minimum and maximum temperature permitted during filling discharge or transport in ISO tank?

Temperature range permitted is always depended on the design temperature range of the ‘shell’ of the tank.

For classes 1 and 3 to 9, IMDG Code requires

Cargo temperature Design Temperature range of shell
Substances transported under ambient conditions -40°C to 50°C
Substances filled, discharged or transported above 50°C Temperature shall not be less than the maximum temperature of the substance during filling, discharge or transport

There are three types of cargos which needs consideration of design temperature:

  1. Solids which are filled and discharged at temperatures above their melting point and which are cooled and transported as a solid mass.
  2. Solids transported above their melting point
  3. Elevated temperature liquids

For solids which are filled and discharged by melting and while in transport it is cooled down and transported as a solid mass IMDG Code has assigned tank provision TP33.

When such a solid is offered for transport check the melting point of the substance and check the design temperature range in tank certificate/tank plate to ensure it is within the safe limit.

Cargo transport units containing a substance that is transported or offered for transport in a liquid state at a temperature equal to or exceeding 100°C or in a solid state at a temperature equal to or exceeding 240°C must bear on each side and on each end the mark shown in the figure below.

The mark must be an equilateral triangle. The colour of the mark must be red. The minimum dimension of the sides shall be 250 mm except for portable tanks with a capacity of not more than 3,000 L where the sides may be reduced to 100 mm.
